THE ART STUDIO @ Sloop Studios
In August 2024 I submitted an application for a studio space within the Sloop Studios here in St Ives. I was delighted when my submission was successful! This giving me the opportunity to create work within the town just a short walk away from our gallery & Back Road Artworks.
The Sloop Studios were established in 1969 (so they are practically as old as me!) designed as working studio retail units for artists & craftspeople. The studios were designed by Henry C Gilbert & built by Leonard Williams using local materials such as granite, slate & stone creating a unique setting. The studios are located in the corner of the car park behind the famous Sloop Inn. There is another entrance off Back Road by Norway Stores which is open once the studios have opened up for the day.
Having this studio is allowing me the creative space to develop the artistic side of my practice. I wanted to separate the jewellery/metalwork element of my work so this will remain at the garden studio for now. The Sloop space will become my ‘Art studio’ where I intend to explore the new ‘Metallic alchemy’ work & create larger paintings which had not been possible in my small work space previously. At the moment I am unclear as to which days I will be working at the new studio. Once it is up & running I will make sure I share the days I will be there. I am currently running the gallery while Tim is off work. Having this space will make it much easier to discuss commissions & show a wider breadth of my work. I am looking forward to making a creative mess!
